Since being inspired to document a visit to the Himalayan Kingdom of Nepal in 1988, photography has lead Matt Darby on a journey across much of Asia and the globe. Since that time assignments in Borneo, China, India, Nepal, Thailand and Tibet have captured his imagination for the vast region and its divergent people and cultures.
Closer to home in Australia client briefs’ have taken Matt to Tasmania’s majestic Franklin River, the graceful beauty of balloon flight, the ski experience of the Victorian Alps. Whilst being recognized early on for his images of climbing and adventure tourism it is his documenting of the people of Tibet’s eastern provinces that is his proudest achievement to date. Exhibiting in Melbourne, Australia in 2002 and in Litchfield, CT, USA in 2005. In 2006 he intends to return to Tibet to complete photography for an upcoming book on the region.
A talented landscape photographer it is however composing images of people that drives Matt to pursue his chosen craft. Whether it is a people going about their daily lives, a climber scaling an overhanging cliff, the serenity of a Buddhist monk making a sand mandala or the intimacy of a portrait, Matt endeavors to capture each moment with equal clarity and commitment.
